Malaysia mulls glue control

The Malaysia government is considering legislation to make glue-sniffing a crime.

File under: Drug war gone too far. "Drop the glue!"

KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 (Bernama) -- The Government is studying a proposal to make glue a controlled item, Deputy Minister of Internal Security Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum told the Dewan Negara Thursday.

He said the detailed study was necessary because of the importance of glue for the furniture and handicraft industries.

"Glue is a crucial component in the making of furniture and handicraft, hence the in-depth study is important to avoid major problems," he said in reply to Senator Wan Ubaidah Omar during question time.

Efforts are also being taken to curb glue-sniffing among students by educating them on the dangers of the act alongside the drug prevention education through a special curriculum, he said.

Education, awareness and skills programmes are also organised for parents to help them prevent and protect their children from being involved in glue-sniffing, he said.

Johari said the ministry was considering enacting a legislation to make glue-sniffing and other hallucinogens a crime.
